Winter Heating Safety

According to the National Fire Protection Association, “heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths.” With 50% of home heating equipment fires occurring between December and February, you can protect your home and your family’s lives with a few simple tips.

  • Keep a three foot space around all heating equipment; this includes people, pets, furniture, bedding, and anything that may burn, melt, or overheat.

  • Always plug portable heating directly into the wall, rather than using an extension cord or power strip. Make sure all extension cords are rated correctly for what to plan to plug in.

  • Never leave a portable heater on when leaving the room or going to bed.

  • Check smoke detectors monthly.
