Winter Heating Safety

According to the National Fire Protection Association, “heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths.” With 50% of home heating equipment fires occurring between December and February, you can protect your home and your family’s lives with a few simple tips.

  • Keep a three foot space around all heating equipment; this includes people, pets, furniture, bedding, and anything that may burn, melt, or overheat.

  • Always plug portable heating directly into the wall, rather than using an extension cord or power strip. Make sure all extension cords are rated correctly for what to plan to plug in.

  • Never leave a portable heater on when leaving the room or going to bed.

  • Check smoke detectors monthly.

Don’t let this be you this holiday season! Every outdoor circuit should have a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupt) outlet for safety and a waterproof bubble cover is a sure way to keep your outlet and wires dry. Did you know that GFCI outlets have been required outdoors in new construction since 1973, but not all houses have them? Make sure you are ready for the rain and dark days—email for an appointment today!

Air Conditioning

Though the weather outside is frightful, warm weather will return someday and now is the best time to get wall-mounted or central air conditioning installed. Systems are cheaper this time of year and installers often have more availability to work around your needs. Not sure what kind of air conditioning is right for your home? Check out these “Top Tips for Choosing an Air Conditioner” from Bob Vila.
