Northwest Electric and Solar offer options for battery backup installations in Washington State – which either can be installed with a solar system or alone.
- LG Chem Energy Storage System (ESS) with SolarEdge’s Storedge Energy Hub
- Tesla Powerwall with Tesla Gateway.
Your home battery backup system can provide clean reliable power during a utility outage. It is intended to replace a fossil-fuel burning generator. It does not pollute the air and does not require you to keep combustible gasoline or diesel on hand.
Without battery storage, a solar system automatically shuts down during a power outage.
If you already have solar energy or when you get a solar system at the same time as your battery, the solar-connected battery backup installation is eligible in Washington State for the Federal Income Tax Credit. Purchase and installation on the solar system is state sales tax exempt, but you will have to pay sales tax on the battery backup system.
Using Battery Backup
Backup Power: Switching over to battery power is automatic the instant the utility grid goes down. The seamless transition has no ill-effects on your electronics and appliances. When the grid comes back, another seamless transition switches you back. The battery will then automatically re-charge from grid power, or will recharge from your solar energy system during daylight.
Self Consumption: Clean electricity from your battery is intended for self-consumption. In Washington, you are not allowed to send battery power to the grid for net metering credits as you do with solar electricity.
Load Shifting: In the future, if your electric utility goes to “time-of-use” rates, you can save money when you use battery power during the most expensive rate time periods and charge the battery up during less expensive time periods. This is how a battery can offer financial benefit in places like California where electricity during peak hours is very expensive or when a customer pays a high “demand charge.”
Partial Home Backup
Partial backup works great for anyone looking to back up just a few critical loads. We’ll install a small subpanel and relocate up to 10 loads (every 30 amps and under) into this panel, which will then have power during an outage.
Whole Home Backup
If you want to be able to run your own microgrid at your home, this is the option for you. Keep everything in your home powered during an outage!
When you Request an Estimate for a solar battery backup installation, we will evaluate your Washington State site and customize the design to meet your need for uninterrupted electricity during a grid outage. All battery storage proposals require an in-person site visit before we confirm the final price.
LG Chem RESU
Each LG Chem Energy Storage System consists of one or more 9.8 kW (10 Hour) rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs, SolarEdge Hub Inverter, and SolarEdge Backup Interface. LG Chem batteries can be mounted on the wall, floor or ground, indoors or outdoors. They can be placed adjacent to each other or stacked front to back.
We customize the design to meet your site’s needs for uninterrupted electricity during a grid outage. You can choose from partial home back up to full home backup.
- Partial Home Backup provides power for just a few critical loads. Consists of 1 battery + 1 inverter + 1 interface.
- Whole Home Backup runs your whole home as an independent microgrid. Consists of 3 batteries + 2 inverters + 1 interface.
Installation takes 1 to 2 days for a residential system. When the installation is complete, our electrician will test the system. We will turn off grid power to simulate a power outage, and train you to use the cell phone app.

Each Tesla Powerwall Battery system consists of one or more 13.5 kW rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs, an integrated inverter, and software housed in a Gateway that intelligently dispatches electricity. Powerwall can be mounted on the wall, floor or ground, indoors, or outdoors. They can be placed adjacent to each other or stacked front to back.
System size (number of Powerwall batteries) depends on the size of your solar system, the electric loads you want to run when the grid goes down and the length of time you need to power them. We take care of everything from design and permits to testing and teaching you how to use them.
The solar battery backup installation takes 1 to 2 days for a Washington State residential system, longer for a larger system. When the installation is complete, our electrician will test the system. We will turn off-grid power to simulate a power outage, and train you to use the Powerwall cell phone app.
