Northwest Electric and Solar offers options for battery backup – either can be installed with a solar system or alone.
Your home battery backup system can provide clean reliable power during a utility outage. It is intended to replace a fossil-fuel burning generator. It does not pollute the air and does not require you to keep combustible gasoline or diesel on hand.
Without battery storage, a solar system automatically shuts down during a power outage.
If you already have solar energy or when you get a solar system at the same time as your battery, the purchase and installation of solar-connected battery backup is eligible for the Federal Income Tax Credit (22% when installed by 12-31-2021, lower percentage if installed in 2022). Purchase and installation on the solar system is state sales tax exempt, but you will have to pay sales tax on the battery backup system.
Using Battery Backup
Backup Power: Switching over to battery power is automatic the instant the utility grid goes down. The seamless transition has no ill-effects on your electronics and appliances. When the grid comes back, another seamless transition switches you back. The battery will then automatically re-charge from grid power, or will recharge from you solar energy system during daylight.
Self Consumption: Clean electricity from your battery is intended for self-consumption. In Washington, you are not allowed to send battery power to the grid for net metering credits as you do with solar electricity.
Load Shifting: In the future, if your electric utility goes to “time-of-use” rates, you can save money when you use battery power during the most expensive rate time periods and charge the battery up up during less expensive time periods. This is how a battery can offer financial benefit in places like California where electricity during peak hours is very expensive or when a customer pays a high “demand charge.”
Partial Home Backup
Partial works great for anyone looking to backup just a few critical loads. We’ll install a small subpanel and relocate up to 10 loads (each 30 amps and under) into this panel, which will then have power during an outage.
Whole Home Backup
If you want to be able to run your own microgrid at your home, this is the option for you. Keep everything in your home powered during an outage!

LG Chem batteries can be mounted on the wall, floor or ground, indoors or outdoors. They can be placed adjacent to each other or stacked front to back.
