Tesla Powerwall home backup battery can provide clean reliable backup power during a utility power outage. Powerwall is designed to replace a generator for residential or commercial purposes. When compared to a generator, Powerwall is silent, does not burn fossil fuels, does not pollute the air, and does not require you to purchase more fuel to refill. Instead, it will be recharged with sunshine falling on your solar system during daylight, or recharged by the grid when it returns.
Tesla Powerwall can be added to your home or business with or without a solar system. When you get a solar system at the same time, or if you already have solar, purchase and installation of Powerwall is eligible for the Federal Income Tax Credit (26% when installed before 12-31-2020, lower percentage if installed in 2021).
Without battery storage, a solar system automatically shuts down during a power outage. Solar alone is not a source of backup power.
How long the Powerwall battery will last during an outage depends partly on what you use it for. You can make the battery last longer by turning off and unplugging appliances at your site that are not essential. And with the cell phone app, you can monitor how much of the battery you have used up.

NWES is now a Certified Tesla Powerwall Installer and we make it easy for you. We take care of everything from design and permits to testing and teaching you how to use it.
Each Powerwall system consists of one or more 13.5 kW rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs, an integrated inverter, and software housed in a Gateway that intelligently dispatches electricity. Powerwall can be mounted on the wall, floor or ground, indoors or outdoors. They can be placed adjacent to each other or stacked front to back.
We customize the design to meet your site’s needs for uninterrupted electricity during a grid outage. Size (one or more Powerwall batteries) depends on the size of your solar system, the electric loads you want to run when the power goes out and the length of time you need to power them. Installation takes 1 to 2 days for residential, longer for a larger commercial system.
When installation is complete, our electrician will test the system. We will turn off grid power to simulate a power outage, and train you to use the online Powerwall app.

Backup Power: Switching over to battery power is automatic the instant the grid goes down. The seamless transition will have no ill-effects on your electronics and appliances. When the grid comes back, another seamless transition switches you back. The battery will then automatically re-charge from grid power, or will recharge from solar if the grid is still down the next day.
Self Consumption: Clean electricity from Powerwall is intended for self-consumption. In WA, you cannot send its power to the grid for net metering credits as you do with solar electricity.
EV Charging During a Power Outage: It is possible to charge your EV’s battery from Powerwall battery but this will drain Powerwall quickly. During an outage, it is better to find a different source of power to charge your Electric Vehicle.
Load Shifting: In the future, if your electric utility goes to “time-of-use” rates, Powerwall can charge up during low rate periods and discharge (replace grid power) during the most expensive rate periods to save you money. This is how Powerwall offers financial benefit in places like California where electricity during peak hours is very expensive or when a customer pays a high “demand charge.”
